LBCC Students Present at SSCC

Each year, the Student Senate for California Community Colleges holds a General Assembly, where resolutions are submitted by all Associated Student Body (ASB) entities from the California Community College system and voted on by ASB delegates. Passed resolutions are then included in the Student Senate’s lobbying efforts, as well as legislative proposals, creating statewide change for all community college students in California.

At this year’s General Assembly in Santa Clara, a total of 82 resolutions were submitted. Long Beach City College ASB submitted four and successfully got three passed. This was the first LBCC ASB Cabinet to successfully submit and pass legislation in five years. The passed resolutions include:

  • The Murdered, Missing Indigenous Peoples (MMIP) resolution, a cultural safety initiative for all California Community Colleges aimed at providing resources to Title IX and Title V students who are affected by the MMIP epidemic. This resolution was written by LBCC Student Trustee, Emma Manetta.
  • The resolution to Implement NAGPRA Committees, aimed toward holding colleges accountable within the context of the Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. This resolution would impact CC’s through the implementation of NAGPRA committees on each campus and would require a tribal/community liaison to be present. This resolution was written by Student Trustee, Emma Manetta.
  • The resolution to Implement Hyflex Technology on Campuses, aimed toward implementing hybrid technology in at least 50% of classrooms for all California Community Colleges. This resolution makes higher education and overall degree completion more accessible by providing a standardized emergency or intermittent remote learning option for students experiencing sudden or ongoing obstacles throughout the school year. This resolution was written by ASB President, CoCo Dobard.

Each of these resolutions was the first of its kind to be presented to the Student Senate in its history. The effects of these resolutions will be seen in the coming years on community college campuses.
