The New State-of-the-Art Classroom is Celebrated with a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Long Beach City College (LBCC) Board of Trustees, students, and employees officially celebrated the opening of the largest e-sports lab in Southern California with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, February 27. The $2.3 million state-of-the-art classroom features cutting-edge technology to support students interested in the rapidly growing e-sports industry.

“Long Beach City College is proud to lead the way in providing students with access to this rapidly growing multi-billion-dollar e-sports industry with well-paying jobs,” said Uduak-Joe Ntuk, LBCC Board of Trustees President. “This cutting-edge facility is more than just a gaming lab—it’s a gateway to future careers in technology, broadcasting, and game development. Our investment in this state-of-the-art space reflects our commitment to innovation, workforce development, and student success in the digital era.”

The Mural Depicting Life in North Long Beach Won a Gold Award in the Outdoor Signage Category

The North Long Beach Higher Education Center, a collaborative effort between Long Beach City College (LBCC) and the City of Long Beach, received a prestigious 2024 Davey Award, Gold Winner, in the category of Outdoor/Environmental Signage & Environmental Graphics for its striking exterior mural depicting life in North Long Beach.

LONG BEACH, CA – Today, Congresswoman Nanette Barragán (CA-44) celebrated $1,000,000 in federal funding she secured for Long Beach City College (LBCC) to build the North Long Beach Student Housing and Higher Education Complex.

The funding will support the development of a mixed-use complex with affordable student housing, a large multipurpose community room, study rooms, shared kitchens, and support services on site. Housing will be available to low-income LBCC students at an affordable rent and open to students with dependents.

“Low-income college students often worry about balancing the cost of tuition, housing, and other essential needs,” said Rep. Barragán. “I was proud to secure this funding so Long Beach City College students, including those with children, can access affordable housing while they pursue their higher education. By building this complex in North Long Beach, educational resources and other services will be more accessible to students who do not live near campus.”

Long Beach City College (LBCC) will host a special event this Thursday, October 24 commemorating the late civil rights activist Dorothy Pitman Hughes’ historic visit to LBCC in 2019. The event will feature an art exhibit and raise funds for the “LBCC Helping Homeless Students” initiative.

“This week’s fundraiser provides us with an opportunity to honor Dorothy Pitman Hughes’ legacy of activism, while supporting our unhoused students, which has been a priority for the Board of Trustees for years,” said Dr. Mike Muñoz, LBCC Superintendent-President. “The combination of art, history, and community engagement truly reflects the spirit of LBCC and our ongoing mission to promote social equity.”

Originally planned as a two-hour speaking engagement at LBCC, Pitman Hughes’ historic visit grew into a three-day event that included classroom discussions, a signature “Talking Circle,” and visits to key locations around the city of Long Beach, including Los Cerritos Elementary School and the Michelle Obama Library. LBCC was the site of her final professional speaking appearance before she passed in 2022.

LBCC has a proud connection with Olympic Water Polo Success

It is an exciting Summer for Long Beach City College (LBCC) Vikings Water Polo Head Coach Chris Oeding, who was first inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame on June 7, and will now head to Paris for his third trip to the Olympics as a coach.

Since 2000, Oeding has served as head coach for the LBCC water polo and swimming programs, leading them to six state championships. In 2013, he joined the staff of the US women’s national team as an assistant coach, a role he has served in for five World Championships.
