LONG BEACHCAOctober 3, 2024 — Today, Long Beach City College (LBCC) received the 2024 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. As a recipient of the annual HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — Long Beach City College will be featured, along with 113 other recipients, in the November/December 2024 issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine.

“It’s a tremendous honor for LBCC to be the only community college in Southern California and one of just two in the entire state, to receive the 2024 HEED Award from Insight Into Diversity,” said Dr. Mike Muñoz, LBCC Superintendent-President. “This recognition highlights our unwavering dedication to advancing educational equity and success for all students. This award truly reflects the hard work and commitment of our LBCC team and leadership who have made this achievement possible. The HEED Award also reflects the collective efforts to make LBCC a model for diversity and inclusion.”

Insight Into Diversity magazine selected LBCC in recognition of the college’s significant progress made in improving graduation rates across all student groups, expanding outreach efforts through the Early College Initiative and pre-college programs, and securing funding to support LBCC’s diverse student body.

“The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees — and best practices for both — leadership support for diversity, campus culture and climate, supplier diversity, and many other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of Insight Into Diversity magazine. “We take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus.”
