Laura Scavuzzo Wheeler, originally from eastern Pennsylvania, earned her BA from the University of Virginia with a double major in English and Italian. Her MA and PhD in English are both from USC, where she wrote her dissertation on English Protestant impulses toward external marking of clothes, character, language, and faith during the English Renaissance. Before coming to LBCC and while pursuing her doctorate, she taught undergraduates in USC’s Writing Program for seven years and helped train incoming composition instructors.

She has been teaching full-time at LBCC since 1998 in a variety of courses, including Survey of British Literature, Parts I and II; Introduction to Shakespeare; Survey of Western Literature; College Grammar; and Intro to Literature as well as a full complement of composition courses. During her recent sabbatical, she drew on her experiences of teaching grammar to write a textbook for use particularly in the College Grammar course, called An Anatomy of Grammar:  A Student’s Approach.  She served as the college’s Honors Coordinator and for many years has helped organize the department’s college essay competition, Jacaranda.  Each semester she enjoys working within the Honors Program and with the many different students who bring a breadth of experience to the classroom. She is married and has two children and a beloved Scottish Terrier.
