FAQ

How long does it take to complete the program?

Depending on the number of units you take and whether you are a full-time or part-time student, completing a certificate program can take as little as one semester and completing an associate degree program can take about two years.

The Web Development Program is offered in accelerated and regular semester length courses. In Fall 2019 we will offer a Boot Camp Model for COSW 10 and COSW 20 courses (8 weeks back to back) so that students can get through the program in a timely manner.

Make a 30-minute appointment with an academic counselor to receive services in educational plans, transcript evaluation, and career planning.

WHICH COURSE SHOULD I START WITH?

We suggest that students start with COSW 10 Beginning Website Development as the first course. It is the recommended preparation course for all of the other courses. After that class, you can proceed to COSW 240 Intro to Content Management Systems and COSW 20 Front End Website Development. Our most advanced courses are COSW 30 Web Development with PHP/MySQL, COSW 200 Introduction to JavaScript and jQuery and COSW 230 Web Development Frameworks all which require programming concepts such as variables, data types, loops, and conditional logic.

WHAT IS FRONT END DEVELOPMENT VS. BACK END DEVELOPMENT?

Front end development concentrates primarily on the visual design and user experience of a website or the client side of a website. It typically involves a strong understanding of HTML, CSS with some JavaScript for site interaction. Back end development is more specific to the server side code which is consists of the behind the scenes processing of the features on a website. This typically involves a data connection and a programming language such as PHP, JAVA, Python, and Ruby.

DO YOU OFFER ONLINE COURSES?

Yes, we offer online courses using our Course Management System, Canvas. Typically in the shorter sessions (Winter and Summer) we offer COSW 10 Beginning Website Development and COSW 20 Front End Website Development. We offer COSW 240 Intro to Content Management Systems online once a year, and alternate COSW 30 Web Development with PHP/MySQL and COSW 200 Introduction to JavaScript and jQuery yearly.

DO YOU OFFER EVENING AND/OR WEEKEND COURSES?

Yes. Our program is primarily offered in evening hybrid courses with a start time of 6 pm during the Fall and Spring semesters. We offer a Saturday class for our beginner’s course COSW 10 Beginning Website Development.

I HAVE PRIOR EXPERIENCE IN WEB DEVELOPMENT. CAN I STILL TAKE CLASSES?

If you have been away from HTML/CSS for more than 2 years we recommend that you start with our COSW 10 course – Beginning Website and follow the recommended path. If you know HTML/CSS and would like to just take a course or two to update your skills, you are welcome to register for the more advanced courses. Feel free to contact us to ask any questions you might have about your qualifications and suggestions on which courses to take.
