CA College Promise Grant

An LBCC student flashing the #2 with her fingers.

The California College Promise Grant waives enrollment fees for community college students who are California residents and qualify by meeting certain income and eligibility requirements.

CCPG Eligibility Requirements

In an effort to help students succeed in the California community colleges, the Student Success Act of 2012 was enacted to create minimum academic and progress standards that must be met for continued eligibility for the California College Promise Grant (CCPG).

  • ACADEMIC - Sustain a GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • PROGRESS - Complete more than 50% of your coursework.
  • If your cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 for two consecutive primary semesters, you may be subject to lose your fee waiver eligibility.
  • If the cumulative number of units you complete is less than 50% in two consecutive primary semesters, you may be subject to lose your fee waiver eligibility.

The California College Promise Grant (CCPG) waives only the enrollment fees. It does not cover the fees for College Services, Student Health, Parking, facilities usage, or any course materials.

California College Promise Grant Facts

  • If you submit a FAFSA application or California Dream Act Application, you will be automatically considered for a California College Promise Grant and other federal and state financial aid funds.
  • If you qualify for a California College Promise Grant, the State of California will pay for your enrollment fees. It does not pay for the College Services Card, Student Health Services, or course materials.
  • California College Promise Grants are only for California residents as determined by Admissions & Records.

Academic & Progress Standards

Any combination of two consecutive terms of cumulative GPA below 2.0, and/or cumulative unit completion of less than 50% may result in loss of California College Promise Grant eligibility.

FAQs

How will I know if I am in danger of losing my California College Promise Grant?

You will be notified within 30 days of the end of each term if you are being placed on either Academic (GPA) and/or progress (course completion) probation. Your notification will include the information that the second term of probation will result in the loss of California College Promise Grant eligibility. After the second consecutive term of probation, you may lose eligibility for the California College Promise Grant at your next registration opportunity.

How do I regain eligibility for my California College Promise Grant?

If you lose eligibility for the California College Promise Grant, you can file an appeal by submitting the CCPG Fee Waiver Appeal. In doing so, there are a few ways that you can have the California College Promise Grant reinstated:

  • Improve your GPA or course completion measures to meet the academic and progress standards.
  • Successfully appeal the ruling regarding extenuating circumstances.
  • Successfully appeal the ruling based on significant academic improvement.
  • Not attending your school district (LBCC) for two consecutive primary semesters.

The appeal process for extenuating circumstances includes the following:

  • Verified accidents, illness, or other circumstances beyond your control.
  • Changes in your economic situation.
  • Evidence of inability to obtain essential support services.
  • Special consideration factors for CalWORKs, EOPS, DSPS, and student veterans.
  • Disability accommodations not received in a timely manner
Please note that foster youth and former foster youth (24 years old and younger) and recipients of Cal Vet Fee Waiver are not subject to loss of the California College Promise Grant under these regulations.

What is LBCC’s policy for Bachelor’s Degree Program Participants?

The California College Promise Grant (CCPG) will cover the base $46 per unit enrollment fee and will not include any baccalaureate program upper division fees. Community Colleges approved to offer baccalaureate degrees shall charge a fee for upper division coursework of $84 per regular semester credit unit or $56 per regular quarter credit unit. These fees are in addition to the $46 per unit fees charged to all community college students.

Students accepted into a Bachelor’s Degree program at LBCC will need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) for determination of eligibility for both the California College Promise Grant (CCPG) and other Federal and State financial aid.
