First Generation College Students

Who is a First-Generation College Student?

First-generation college students are an essential part of the Long Beach City College community. A first-generation college student is commonly defined as a student whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) have not completed a four-year college or university degree. These students bring unique perspectives, strengths, and determination as they pursue higher education, often becoming the first in their families to earn a degree. LBCC is committed to supporting first-generation students through resources, programs, and opportunities that promote access, belonging, and success.

Nationally Recognized First Gen Week

Each year, colleges and universities across the country recognize First-Generation College Celebration Day on November 8. This date honors the anniversary of the Higher Education Act of 1965, which expanded access to higher education for underrepresented groups. Many campuses, including LBCC, extend this celebration into an entire First-Gen Week that highlights student stories, hosts workshops and panels, and builds community among students, staff, and faculty. The national celebration is supported by the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) and the Center for First-Generation Student Success (NASPA), and LBCC is proud to take part in recognizing the contributions of first-generation students.

Why Is This Important?

Recognizing and supporting first-generation students matters because of the profound impact higher education can have on individuals, families, and communities. These students expand equity and access on college campuses, strengthen representation, and bring diverse perspectives into classrooms and leadership spaces. Completing college is often life-changing, not only for the student but for their families and future generations. First-generation students also contribute resilience, adaptability, and resourcefulness to the LBCC learning community, making them vital to our collective success.
