Pod

First Time College Student

(You’ve never attended a community college or university.)

Welcome to LBCC! 

By completing all application steps as a first-time college student, you will be admitted to the First Year Experience (FYE) Program and receive free tuition through the Long Beach College Promise or Viking Advantage Program.

Continuing Student

We have counselors who are assigned to special/categorial programs. Find your program counselor from the list of All LBCC Counselors by Program and schedule an appointment for comprehensive services.

For quick questions, please meet with Drop-in Counselor (First come, First served)

The counseling department offers many services to our students throughout the year. During our peak times, we tailor our services to prepare students for the upcoming semester, which includes One Semester Educational Planning, Prerequisite Clearance, Unit overload Petitions and other general questions.

Our peak time services will run during the following dates:
  • August 11 – August 29, 2024
  • January 27 – February 7, 2025
  • June 1 – June 19, 2025

*Note: Remote and In-person drop-in counseling is available at both campuses.

(In-person drop in counseling hours are subject to counselor availability and offered on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact the counseling office at LAC or PCC for the day’s schedule if you are interested in having an in-person drop-in.) 

  • Monday – Thursday: 8AM – 7PM
  • Friday: 8AM – 12PM

Undecided Students 

If you are undecided about your major and/or career, please complete My Majors Assessment and schedule an appointment with a Career Counselor.

Adult & Continuing Education Students

You should meet with an Adult & Continuing Education (ACE) Counselor if you meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • If you have taken Noncredit Courses at LBCC and are interested in enrolling in Credit Courses
  • If you have completed a Noncredit Certificate and are looking into Credit Certificates or Associates Degrees
  • If you are close to completing your GED/HISET and would like to enroll in Credit Courses
  • If you need assistance with exploring career and educational options that align with your skills, interests, and goals
  • If you would like to connect with student support services such as tutoring, financial aid, job-readiness, and more

Completions & Second Year Experience Student

You should meet with a Completions & Second Year Experience (SYE) counselor if you meet one or more of the following criteria: 

  • If you have completed 30 units or more at LBCC or another college or university 
  • If you will be completing a degree or certificate and only have one semester left 
  • If you are part of the Second Year Experience (SYE) program

Returning Student

You’ve attended LBCC, but have missed 2 or more semesters in a row. In order to receive service and register for courses, you must Re-apply to LBCC in order to register for classes and to schedule a counseling appointment.

Incoming Transfer Student 

College-level coursework completed at another regionally-accredited college or university may be applied to LBCC certificate, degree, or general education certification requirements. 

Official transcripts received by LBCC Admissions and Records from other institutions (e.g. other community colleges or universities) will be automatically evaluated if:

  1. The student has met with an LBCC counselor to create a Student Educational Plan
  2. The student is enrolled in at least one course at LBCC
    (NOTE: US Veterans and LBCC Student Athletes will automatically have outside transcripts routed for evaluation.) 
  3. Students may schedule a counseling appointment to create an educational plan.

Dual Enrollment Student 

Welcome Dual Enrollment Students! 

LBCC’s Early College Initiatives (ECI) offers four early college programs that allow middle and/or high school students to enroll in and receive credit for college courses. These programs include:

  1. Individual Dual Enrollment (IDE)
  2. College & Career Access Pathways (CCAP) – Includes Long Beach Unified School District, Norwalk/La Mirada School District, and Intellectual Virtues Academy.
  3. Early College at Browning High School (ECB)
  4. High School Articulation (Credit-by-Exam)

Undocumented Student 

DREAM Services is dedicated to serving undocumented students through advocacy, guidance, and support. We can assist with your academic counseling, textbooks, legal consultations, and more. Our mission is to support the advancement of undocumented students within higher education and promote pathways for engaged scholarship.

The International Student Counselor is available to meet with current F1/M1 student visa students attending LBCC to discuss your academic, career and personal goals.
