Course Routine Review

Overview

Course Routine Review

LBCC uses a regular Course Routine Review cycle to ensure that existing Course Outlines of Record (CORs) remain current, accurate, compliant, and aligned with disciplinary standards. All adopted courses are placed on LBCC’s established six-year Routine Review cycle, with more frequent review requirements applying to certain CTE curriculum.

The COR is the official record of the approved course and is governed by requirements established in Title 5 §55002. In addition, Title 5 §55003(b)(4) requires prerequisites and corequisites to be reviewed at least once every six years to determine whether they remain necessary and appropriate. Prerequisites and corequisites associated with vocational/CTE courses or programs must be reviewed every two years.

Routine Review is more than an editing exercise. Faculty should use the process to determine whether the entire COR still accurately represents the course students are receiving and the standards faculty expect students to achieve.

Getting Started

Using the Collaborative Spreadsheet, Department Heads identify a Faculty Author for each course scheduled for Routine Review. Each Faculty Author is paired with a designated Routine Reviewer from the Committee on Curriculum and Instruction (CCI) who works collaboratively with the Faculty Author throughout the review.

Once courses and authors have been identified, Faculty Authors may begin reviewing their assigned courses in CIM.

In CIM, locate the course and select Edit → Course Routine Review. Identify the assigned Routine Reviewer and begin reviewing the COR.

Timelines

  1. September: Department Heads receive the Collaborative Spreadsheet and identify Faculty Authors per course.
  2. September – December: Faculty Author reviews and edits the course outline fields as necessary in CIM
  3. December 1: Faculty Author have submitted courses to workflow.
  4. Winter – Spring: Routine Reviewer collaborates with Faculty Author. Routine Reviewer approved and moves to DH and Dean for sign off.
  5. May 1: Routine Review for all courses has completed.

What Should Faculty Authors and Routine Reviewers Review?

Faculty Authors and Routine Reviewers should review the COR as a whole, even when they anticipate making few or no changes. Particular attention should be given to whether:

  • prerequisites, corequisites, and advisories remain necessary and appropriate;
  • the catalog description, course content, objectives, and student learning outcomes remain current and aligned;
  • assignments, methods of instruction, and methods of evaluation accurately represent how the course is taught and assessed;
  • units, contact hours, and expected outside-of-class work remain appropriate;
  • representative instructional materials are current and appropriate;
  • existing C-ID, transfer, articulation, and other curricular relationships remain accurate, when applicable; and
  • the COR reflects current disciplinary practices and expectations.

Faculty should also consider available course success and SLO data when evaluating the course. These data may identify opportunities to improve instruction or student outcomes even when a change to the COR itself is not necessary.

Routine Review is also an appropriate opportunity to consider practices developed through professional learning related to student equity, accessibility, inclusive pedagogy, and closing equity gaps.

What Can Be Changed During Routine Review?

Routine Review may include appropriate maintenance and updates to the COR. Some CIM fields are read-only for the Faculty Author and may require assistance from the assigned Routine Reviewer when a change is necessary.

Changes to certain approved Face Page fields do not automatically require faculty to abandon Routine Review and start a separate Modify Course proposal. Instead, CIM uses conditional workflow to route those changes through the additional curriculum review required for the affected fields.

For example, changes to Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs) will route the course for ASLO  Subcommittee review, while any changes to Face Page fields route the course to the Course Evaluation  Subcommittee and Curriculum Committee for official review and approval.
