Viking News Staff Wins 14 Journalism Awards
The Viking News staff takes home award for General Excellence at Conference
The Viking News print edition took home the award for General Excellence at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges southern section conference held October 14 at Cal State Fullerton.
Long Beach City College garnered a total of 14 wins at the conference in a variety of categories, with Journalism student Lisette Mendoza-Tapia leading the pack with six awards.
The following awards were based on the students’ work during the 2016-17 school year published in the Viking News, print and online editions:
Women in Welding
Local high school engineering students learn about the welding trade and promising career opportunities
Long Beach City College’s Metal Fabrication and Welding departments recently hosted a welding workshop exclusively for female engineering students from the Long Beach Unified School District. The College offered the workshop to inspire more young women to join the manufacturing field.
Five Generations of One Family Attend LBCC
When Loyd V. Wilcox enrolled at Long Beach City College, it was at a time when many veterans had just returned from the war. Back then it was the Korean War, and it was 1955.
“It was a different world,” the 78-year-old recalled.
The campus was predominately men, most of the current buildings hadn’t even been built, and it cost a mere $100 for fees and books for one semester, Wilcox said.
“The most expensive book was a chemistry book that was $7.00,” he remembered.
LBCC names Kristin Olson as Executive Director of Classified Human Resources
Long Beach City College has hired Kristin Olson as its new Executive Director of Classified Human Resources.
In this role, Olson will oversee human resources management and employee relations programs for the College’s classified professionals, including recruitment, selection, employment, position classification, compensation and other services.
Olson will begin at LBCC on Oct. 16. She succeeds Monalisa Hasson, who recently left to become Vice President of Human Resources at Santa Barbara City College.
LBCC Names Luisito Amador as Director of Student Equity
Long Beach City College has appointed Luisito “Lui” Amador as its Director of Student Equity.
Student Equity is a statewide initiative that addresses disproportionate levels of educational access, course completion, and graduation and transfer rates among student populations. The initiative provides resources for colleges to identify issues specific to individual campuses, and to target any achievement gaps that exist between different ethnic groups.
